Luigi Nicholas Mangione, a Maryland man, is the suspect in the assassination of the CEO of UnitedHealthcare.
Coming from a wealthy family, Mangione graduated at the top of his class from the elite Gilman School, a private high school in Baltimore, in 2016.
During his graduation ceremony, he delivered the commencement speech, expressing gratitude to his parents and the parents of his classmates for their investment in education.
Mangione continued his academic journey at the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated in 2020 with both bachelor's and master's degrees in engineering. He was also a member of the Eta Kappa Nu Honor Society for Electrical and Computer Engineering.
His criminal record includes a misdemeanor case from December 2023 in Honolulu for trespassing at the Nuuanu Pali Lookout.
Police have identified the Maryland man as the suspect in the December 2024 assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Thompson was shot from behind outside a New York City Hilton hotel just hours before a shareholder conference. At the crime scene, police discovered bullet casings with handwritten words: "depose," "deny," and "defend," which drew comparisons to the book "Delay, Deny, Defend: Why Insurance Companies Don't Pay Claims and What You Can Do About It." This fueled speculation that the murder may have stemmed from resentment over a denied claim.
Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, while eating breakfast after a McDonald's customer and employee recognized him from a wanted poster. He was expected to be transferred by plane and helicopter to New York, where he faced charges of first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism at the state level. The U.S. Attorney's Office later added federal charges that could carry the death penalty.
Initially, Mangione was arrested on charges of possessing a fake ID and unlawful possession of a firearm. His case is currently awaiting trial.
