As head of the Justice Department, the U.S. Attorney General serves as the chief legal adviser to the President and directs the country's federal law enforcement. There are state-level attorneys general, including in the District of Columbia, but only one U.S. Attorney General serves in the President's Cabinet.
The U.S. Attorney General oversees departments such as the FBI and the DEA. Pam Bondi served as Florida's Attorney General before being tapped to serve as U.S. Attorney General under President Donald Trump's second administration. Bondi studied criminal justice at the University of Florida and later earned her law degree from Stetson University College of Law. She spent nearly 20 years as a prosecutor before becoming the first woman to be elected as Florida’s Attorney General in 2010.
State attorneys general handle civil rights issues, environmental protections, and other state-to-state matters. Notable state attorneys general include District of Columbia Attorney General Karl Racine and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
